Explore Family-Friendly Cruise Activities That Keep Kids Engaged and Parents Relaxed

Modern cruise ships have everything a family could want to keep the children entertained.

In fact, the larger ships like the Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas has an entire “neighborhood” dedicated to children and kids activities.

Here are some to consider.

Dive Into Cruise Waterparks with Slides, Splash Zones, and Surf Simulators

With a few exceptions (Virgin Voyages, Holland America, MSC being those exceptions), cruise ships are floating water parks.

And the newer the ship, the more elaborate the water park.

Everything from waterslides and dedicated pool areas (known as splash zones) are located on the upper decks of cruise ships.

Royal Caribbean goes a step further.

On every ship you’ll find FlowRiders.

FlowRiders are surfing simulators.

You’ll stand or lay on a boogie board depending on your skill level and attempt to not wipe out (which is guaranteed to happen).

And don’t worry if you have never surfed before.

You’ll be given an intro lesson to make sure you don’t get hurt when you begin your ride.

There’s also a video on the local ship channel in your stateroom that will show you what to expect.

With an activity as cool as this, you might think you would need to make reservations to enjoy it.

The good news?

You don’t!

There are some occasions where a reservation might be required.

But the truth is it’s almost never crowded. I’ve even seen crew encouraging bystander to try their hand at it.

And one of the best features?

It’s totally FREE!

Race Go-Carts on Norwegian’s Multi-Deck Tracks With Interactive Laser Challenges

This one is unique to Norwegian Cruise Line’s larger, newer ships.

And it’s just what it sounds like.

You get into a go-cart and race around a track that spans two decks of the aft (or rear) section of the ship.

To make it more entertaining, spectators are given laser rifles to shoot infrared lights at the cars to slow them down.

Unlike the Flowrider on Royal Caribbean, the go-carts on NCL ships do charge a fee.

During bad weather, you won’t be able to ride the go-carts for safety concerns.

Battle It Out in Cruise Ship Laser Tag Arenas With Tactical Family Fun

As you’ll see on this list, some activities are unique to one cruise line.

That’s the case with laser tag.

Available on some of the larger and newer NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line) ships, you and your family can engage in tactical exercises and show your kids that you still got it.

As of the time of writing, these are exclusive to Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

It’s just what you’d expect from an escape room, just on a cruise ship.

As long as your children are 12 years and older, this could be a fun activity everyone can enjoy on one of the days on your cruise.

Relax While Your Kids Enjoy Supervised Cruise Clubs With Games and Activities

Most cruise ships have a kids club of some type.

They usually are branded but they’re all basically the same thing.

Cruise ship kids clubs cater to children of all ages.

There’s an area that is exclusively for younger children.

Some parents leave their kids here so they can enjoy the ship without children.

Think of it as cruise ship daycare.

For teenagers and young adults, their clubs have video game consoles like Playstation and XBox with comfortable seating like beanbag chairs.

Play Classic Arcade Games on Cruise Ships With Room Card Access and Nostalgic Fun

Speaking of video games, most cruise ships have old-school style arcade games.

You don’t need quarters to get these started.

Instead, you’ll use your room card to fund the game.

If you are nostalgic for classic 80s video games, you’ll love the cruise ship arcade.

These arcades are not big.

At the same time, they’re almost never crowded.

So if you want a little diversion or show your kids how you got down back in the day, a visit to the arcade might be a good choice.

Compete in Cruise Trivia Games With Themed Challenges and Lighthearted Prizes

When you think about activities that are the most popular on cruise ships, you probably wouldn’t think that trivia would top that list.

It’s so popular that, if you don’t get to the venue early, there’s a very high likelihood that you won’t find a seat.

To make sure you get a seat in the trivia session you want, check the ship app.

In fact, what I like to do is look through the app on the first day of the cruise and see what trivia games I want to be involved in.

You can add them to your calander (in your cruise app, not your phone calander) so you and plan your week.

Triva can be anything from Star Wars, music, movies, sports – you name it, there will probably be trivia for it.

It’s great for super competitive people who like the rush of being right.

But don’t get your hopes up for prizes.

Usually it will be a pen or a keychain.

If you sail Carnival, though, you’ll win the coveted “Ship on a Stick”.

It’s just a cheap, plastic Carnival ship replica. But Carnival trivia veterans love it.

Watch Blockbusters on Cruise Ships With Theater Screenings and Outdoor Movie Nights

I really like this one.

In the afternoons and evenings, the ship will show movies either on the jumbotron at the pool deck or in the theater.

Whether you’ll view movies in the theater or at the pool deck will depend on the ship.

Regardless of where the movie is shown, they will be movies that have just left the theater.

And sometimes, the movies will still be in theaters.

If you sail on Disney Cruise Line, you might even get sneak previews of movies that are soon to be released in theaters.

Movies under the stars is a fun event.

Make sure you get there early.

Depending on the seating arrangements and the popularity of the movie, seating could be hard to find.

There’s something relaxing about watching a movie outside with the sea air blowing over you.

Some cruise lines will even provide popcorn to enjoy while watching your movie.

Honestly, watching movies on a cruise is one of my favorite things to do.

The movies are usually still in theaters on their way out. Or they’ve recently left theaters.

Either way, particularly if it’s a movie I wanted to see but didn’t get the chance, it’s fun watching it on the ship either under the stars or in the theater.

And, like just about everything else on the ship, there is no extra fee to go to the movies.

Simply find what time it’s playing on the cruise ship app, show up, and enjoy!

Learn Something New With Cruise Seminars From Rum History to Northern Lights

Looking through your ship’s app, you’ll find educational seminars on various days of your cruise.

These will typically be on seadays when the most people are onboard the ship.

Some educational sessions on cruise lines are more robust than others.

The luxury lines are sure to have them – Cunard, Oceania, Regent, Seabourn, Silversea.

The other cruise lines have them too.

But the one I want to feature is Holland America.

On my first Holland America cruise on board the Nieuw Amsterdam, we were blessed to have a great cruise director that hosted the EXC Talks.

The structure is similar to Ted Talks but with visuals.

On our cruise, we learned about the history of rum, radios at sea, Earnest Hemmingway and more!

These talks are hosted by the ship’s cruise director.

In addition to EXC Talks, there are also guest speakers.

On this same sailing, we had a guest speaker explain the Northern Lights and the best times of the year to visit.

If you want an old-fashioned, kick back and relax vacation that isn’t stuffy, while getting an education in the process, Holland America is the cruise line for you.

Skate on Royal Caribbean’s Ice Rinks with Free Rentals and Olympic Dreams

This one is unique to Royal Caribbean ships.

On the lower decks you’ll find Studio 8.

This is where you’ll be able to strap on some ice skates and prove why you should have made the Olympic team.

And you don’t have to bring your own skates. They’ll provide them for you.

There is no other cruise line at sea that has this.

So if ice skating is your passion and you want to take a cruise, Royal Caribbean is the one for you.

In fact, if staying active on a cruise is something that is important, there is arguably no cruise line beside Royal Caribbean that can give you a vast variety of activities to keep you moving.

Play Mini-Golf on Cruise Decks With Family-Friendly Fun and Ocean Views

Many cruise ships have mini-golf an upper deck of the ship.

It’s usually not a huge area. But that’s ok. Very few people are using it at any given time.

So you have good odds of being able to enjoy playing mini-golf with your family while on your cruise vacation.

Fly Across Cruise Ship Decks With Royal Caribbean’s Zipline Adventure

This is another one that is unique to Royal Caribbean.

You should know, however, that it is not available on every ship.

If this is something you want to engage in, you’ll want an Oasis class ship or bigger.

The zipline isn’t long. Just a quick slide across the Central Park neighborhood of the ship.

But if you are afraid of heights, I wouldn’t recommend it.

It spans 5 or 6 decks. Nothing for non-acrophobic people.

For those that are, you can watch from the sides.

Stay Active With Cruise Sports Courts for Basketball, Soccer, and Free Play

I put these two together because they use the same area of the ship.

Balls are provided by the ship.

So, again, no need to bring them with you from home.

You also don’t have to worry about your ball going overboard.

It enclosed by a fence on the sides and above.

They are usually big enough to play full-court games.

Most times, however, there are a couple of rims being used to just shoot around.

Challenge Yourself on Cruise Rock Walls With Views and No Crowds

For this one, we’re back on Royal Caribbean ships.

Except, you’ll find rock climbing walls on every ship regardless of size.

The good news is that this one isn’t limited to Royal Caribbean.

Virgin Voyages also has a rock climbing wall to challenge your physical fitness.

And like miniature golf, there won’t be a crowd waiting to use it.

Join Cruise Classes From Towel Folding to Cooking and Photography

I left this category more generic because there will be classes for almost anything, regardless of the cruise line.

Carnival Cruises has classes on how to make towel animals.

Other classes might be cooking, dancing, art, photography, learning how to use apps on computers – the list goes on and on.

Taste and Learn With Cruise Alcohol Seminars Featuring Duty-Free Deals

Do to the subject matter, alcohol appreciation isn’t exactly a “family activity”.

However, I included it here because, if everyone in your family traveling with you is of legal drinking age, it is something that you might enjoy.

While most cruise lines will offer an enjoyable experience, you’ll want to gravitate to the luxury lines for the best experience.

Why do cruise lines offer alcohol apprecation?

Because they want you to purchase the beverages you tried – which isn’t a bad idea since they’re usually cheaper than on land and duty-free.

Shop Onboard Cruise Ships With Duty-Free Deals and Essentials You Forgot

If you are new to cruising, this one might surprise you.

Shopping? On a cruise ship?

Yes!

These vessels are literal floating mini-cities.

And just like any respectable city, it has a mall.

Granted, it not huge.

It’s usually on the deck you entered the ship or a deck or two above or below this.

You can buy just about anything here – jewelry, watches, clothing, souvenirs, alcohol (that you don’t have access to until you pick it up the night before debarkation), pain medication, toenail clippers, swim goggles – almost anything that you might have forgotten to bring.

Just expect to pay a premium for those “oh I forgot to bring that” item you buy on a cruise ship.

Be careful, though.

You don’t use credit cards. Your room key is your credit card.

With few exceptions, your transaction will go through because it will be charged to the credit card on file.

Unlike purchases made in a store on land, the store doesn’t check to see if you have money free on your card.

Instead, the purchased is charged to your room along with any other purchases you made while on board.

You’ll be expect to settle your account before getting off the ship.

So be careful since it’s so easy to buy whatever you see.

Unwind in Adult-Only Cruise Spaces With Ocean Views and Peaceful Lounges

If you want to get away from children – be they your own or others – there are adult-only areas of the ship.

Many times there is a pool and possibly a hot tub that only people 18 and older are allowed to use.

Many enjoy these areas to stretch out on a lounge chair and relax while reading a book, crocheting, or taking a nap (I am DEFINITELY guilty of the last one!).

There are other areas on the ship that are not designated quiet spaces but still achieve the same result.

One of those places is the lower decks that lead outside.

Here you’ll find lounge chairs and you can let your mind free while listening to the sound of the ocean.

You will see people getting their steps in (this area extends around the ship) and workers painting to keep rust at bay.

But nothing intrusive.

If you want a quiet place and don’t need a pool or jacuzzi, this might be just the place.

Other areas are the library (yes, cruise ships have libraries), game room, and lounges that don’t have trivia or some other activity going on.
